Abstract
The area spans 1,283.8 hectares and was registered as a reserve by the Ministerio de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sostenible through Resolution No. 0125 on November 7, 2014. The reserve's geographical coordinates are 1083898.642886 meters north, 1079220.383515 meters south, 2165612.713540 meters east, and 1079220.383515 meters west. The reserve is zoned into four areas: agrosistemas, amortiguación, conservación, and uso intensivo e infraestructura. The agrosistemas zone covers 43.49% of the reserve, primarily consisting of grazing land for extensive cattle ranching, which is characteristic of the region's Llanos inundables. The amortiguación zone, accounting for 19.94% of the reserve, serves as a buffer zone surrounding the conservation area. The conservación zone, covering 36.46% of the reserve, is comprised of forested areas along the banks of the El Gavilán River and other smaller streams. The uso intensivo e infraestructura zone, occupying 0.12% of the reserve, is designated for residential purposes. The reserve's conservation area is characterized by forested zones along the El Gavilán River and other smaller streams. The area is bordered by a narrow buffer zone, and the remaining areas are designated for grazing and residential use. The plan de manejo de la reserva provides further information on the permitted uses for each zone. The reserve's establishment is part of a broader effort to promote sustainable land use and conservation in the region. The reserve's establishment is a key component of the conservacolombia initiative, which aims to support subnational protected area establishment in Colombia. The initiative is supported by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The contents of this report are the responsibility of TNC and do not necessarily reflect the views of USAID or the United States Government. The reserve's establishment is a significant step towards conserving the region's biodiversity and promoting sustainable land use practices. The reserve's zoning plan and management strategy will play a crucial role in ensuring the long-term conservation of the area's natural resources. The reserve's establishment also highlights the importance of community-led conservation efforts in promoting sustainable development and environmental protection in the region.
