Grant is provided under the Community Outreach and Leadership Development Project (6740301) in South Africa to the Institute for a Democratic Alternative for South Africa (IDASA) to develop voter education and documentation programs for the Eastern Transvaal region to allow residents to vote in the country"s first nonracial national elections in April 1994.

Abstract
Between January and April 1994, IDASA will implement an intensive voter education and community support training program, for leaders of every township and rural community in the region (some 2,600 persons), who will in turn, assisted by voter education specialists, conduct workshops for some 500,000 eligible voters. IDASA"s program, one of the most widely respected and utilized voter education programs in South Africa, will include orientation to civil society, democracy, polling, and mock balloting, as well as training in voter documentation.
