USAID. BUR. FOR FOOD FOR PEACE AND VOLUNTARY ASSISTANCE. OFC. OF PRIVATE AND VOLUNTARY COOPERATION (PVC)
Grant to Africare to support a community-based child survival program in Nigeria, including activities to promote oral rehydration therapy, improved maternal/child nutrition through food and weaning supplements, and immunizations.
1986

Abstract
Africare will train 80 members of participating women"s groups in two local government areas to serve as community workers. These workers will educate mothers during group meetings and in the home on the importance of preventive health measures, with a specific focus on home formulation and use of oral rehydration solution and the use of nutritional supplements. Two nutritional food supplement production units, staffed by a site manager and at least four community-based producers, will be established. Home distribution will be carried out by the community workers. Each unit will produce enough food to meet the nutritional needs of between 1,920 and 3,876 children. Africare will promote the Ministry of Health"s Expanded Program of Immunization and conduct follow-up activities during group and home meetings with mothers to reinforce compliance with childhood immunization schedules.
