Abstract
In Senegal, WVRO will train village health workers (VHW"s) to expand by 75 the total number of health huts in the Ministry of Health"s Health Hut program in the Louga Department of the northwest region of Louga. The VHW"s will be responsible for CS interventions, including (1) accelerated immunization; (2) ORT and prevention of diarrheal diseases; (3) nutrition improvement through growth monitoring, improved breastfeeding and weaning practices, and promotion of birth spacing; and (4) malaria prophylaxis and treatment. In the Sudan, WVRO will organize village health committees (VHC"s) and train VHW"s in approximately 85 villages in the eastern part of Gezira Province in the Central Region in the first year, and will expand to approximately 60 more villages in the second and third year. The VHC"s and VHW"s will be responsible for interventions, including (1) immunization of children under 3 with BCG, DPT, oral polio, and measles vaccines; (2) immunization of women with tetanus toxoid; (3) promotion of ORT and home measures for preventing diarrhea; (4) nutrition improvement among children under 5, through growth monitoring, improved breastfeeding and weaning practices, vitamin A supplements, and promotion of home gardens; and (5) supplementary training of the Ministry of Health"s Community Health Workers. Project funds will also be used to support WVRO"s administration of its CS projects and to fund an African child survival training workshop.
