Abstract
The program was designed to incorporate a series of interventions that support and strengthen government, private sector, and civil society capacity for biodiversity conservation. The activity is implemented by RTI International and its consortium partners, including Southern Tanzania Elephant Program (STEP), TRAFFIC, Journalists' Environmental Association of Tanzania (JET), and GeoPoll. The program focuses on five areas of connectivity in Tanzania, including Kwakuchinja, Strangire-Siman, Kigosi Moyowosi-Uvinza, Nyerere-Selous-Udzungwa, and Amani-Nilo. Additionally, the program will work on a sixth area, Pemba Channel Conservation Area (PECCA). The goal of the program is to better understand the political, economic, and social processes promoting or blocking natural resources conservation in relation to wildlife connectivity. The program will conduct a series of political economy analyses (PEA) for each of the six corridors to identify the factors that promote or hinder conservation efforts. The findings from these analyses will inform program interventions at the site level and flag potential program risks and challenges. The Tuhifadhi Maliasili Activity is a critical component of the USAID Tanzania Mission's efforts to address the drivers of habitat fragmentation and habitat loss in Tanzania. The program's focus on building government, private sector, and civil society capacity for biodiversity conservation will help to ensure the long-term sustainability of conservation efforts in Tanzania. The program's approach is based on a comprehensive understanding of the local systems and processes that influence conservation outcomes. The program will work closely with local stakeholders, including government agencies, private sector companies, and civil society organizations, to identify the key factors that promote or hinder conservation efforts.
