Abstract
This has resulted in high rates of deforestation, with 57% of the population relying on biomass for energy. The region's population is expected to more than double by 2050, with up to 50% residing in urban areas, increasing energy demands. The region's energy security is further threatened by climate change, which could reduce hydropower output significantly. The region's high dependency on hydropower makes it vulnerable to impacts of climate change. The cost of power cuts to South Africa's economy is estimated at US$6 billion annually. The region needs to invest in renewable energy, such as solar and micro-hydro, to reduce deforestation and contamination of water quality.
