Abstract
The program is divided into three main topic areas: Business Planning, Sales Planning, and Managing Money. The training is designed to help participants turn their technologies into successful businesses. The first module, Introduction, provides an overview of the Basic Business Skills training and introduces participants to the mindset required to launch their businesses. Participants learn about the principles of being a successful businessperson, including the importance of having fun and being enthusiastic during the training. The module is designed to motivate participants and explain how the Basic Business Skills training will help them run successful businesses using their technologies from the Community Capacity Building (CCB) trainings. The module is structured into three parts: Introduction, Goals and Expectations, and What Makes a Good Businessperson. The first part, Introduction, welcomes participants to the training and provides an overview of the entire Basic Business Skills training. The facilitator sets up a presentation setting and uses a flip chart to introduce the idea of Basic Business Skills and its goals. The facilitator also reviews the structure of the training, which includes Business Planning, Sales Planning, and Managing Money. The second part, Goals and Expectations, introduces the Basic Business Skills training and its relevance. The facilitator uses a flip chart to clarify and manage expectations, understand what participants want to get from the training, and develop a policy around meals, travel allowances, and childcare. The facilitator also sets ground rules for the training, including coming on time, being fully present, and not being distracted by cell phones. The third part, What Makes a Good Businessperson, provides an overview of what a business is and what makes people good at business. The facilitator uses a flip chart to introduce the concept of a business and describes that all businesses provide something that others want to pay for. The facilitator also provides behaviors of a good businessperson, including looking for new product ideas, checking with possible customers, testing new ideas, regularly examining their business, and reinvesting in their business. The training program uses a skit to illustrate the behaviors of a good businessperson. The skit involves two businesspeople selling juice blenders, one of whom is a good businessperson and the other a bad businessperson. The facilitator uses the skit to demonstrate the behaviors of a good businessperson and to encourage participants to think critically about what makes a business successful. Overall, the Establishing Technology Services Clusters to Enhance Local Innovation Ecosystems in South Sudan training program is designed to equip entrepreneurs with the basic business skills required to turn their technologies into successful businesses. The program uses a structured approach to introduce participants to the mindset required to launch their businesses and to provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in business.
