Abstract
This systematic allocation of duties involves explaining the outcomes and results expected and serves as a development exercise for the subordinate. Delegation involves passing responsibility for the completion of work to other people. It is essential to identify activities that can and cannot be delegated. Functions and matters of policy, such as chairing a recruitment exercise or handling confidential matters, should not be delegated. Additionally, delicate assignments that are best handled by the individual, novel situations like negotiations, and tasks with major consequences for profitability or development should not be delegated. When deciding who to delegate to, it is crucial to choose an individual, not a group of people. The immediate subordinate is often the best candidate for delegation. However, it is essential to avoid delegating tasks to high-fliers or individuals who may not be capable of handling the responsibility. Tasks that can be delegated include those that the individual is an expert in, tasks that will give people growth or training, tasks that will add variety to someone else's job, and tasks that the individual has no time to do properly. Delegation can also involve tasks that should be done by the subordinate. To effectively delegate, it is necessary to decide what tasks can be delegated and select capable, willing people to carry out the jobs. Skilled and experienced individuals can handle large tasks with minimal intervention, while inexperienced or unreliable people will require close supervision. Delegation can be an effective way to free up time and resources, allowing individuals to focus on high-priority tasks and develop their subordinates' skills. The benefits of delegation include increased productivity, improved work-life balance, and enhanced employee development. By delegating tasks effectively, individuals can achieve their goals more efficiently and develop their subordinates' skills, leading to a more productive and motivated team.
