Abstract
Funded under USAID Contract No. AID-OAA-I-15-00004, the project connects technical solutions and proven commercial processes to ensure uninterrupted supplies of health commodities. GHSC-PSM's goal is to save lives and create a healthier future for all by purchasing and delivering health commodities, offering comprehensive technical assistance to strengthen national supply chain systems, and providing global supply chain leadership. The project is implemented by Chemonics International, in collaboration with several partner organizations, including Arbola Inc., Axios International Inc., IDA Foundation, IBM, IntraHealth International, Kuehne + Nagel Inc., McKinsey & Company, Panagora Group, Population Services International, SGS Nederland B.V., and University Research Co., LLC. GHSC-PSM's technical assistance focuses on strengthening health institutions, improving supply chain data visibility and commodity security, and promoting supply chain health. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, GHSC-PSM has taken various measures to mitigate the risk of supply chain interruptions. These measures include implementing decentralized procurement (DCP) strategies, leveraging global standards and traceability, and providing technical assistance to countries to strengthen their supply chain systems. The project has also prioritized the procurement of essential commodities, such as personal protective equipment (PPE), ventilators, and oxygen, to support the global response to the pandemic. GHSC-PSM's progress in various health areas, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, family planning and reproductive health, and maternal, newborn, and child health, is a key focus of the project. The project has achieved significant cost savings on medicines and health commodities, as well as cost savings on logistics, through its efficient supply chain management practices. Additionally, GHSC-PSM has made significant contributions to the global fight against COVID-19, including supporting the procurement of COVID-19 equipment for Italy and providing technical assistance to countries to strengthen their health systems. The project's performance is measured through various key performance indicators (KPIs), including delivery timeliness, supply plans, capacity building, and global collaboration. GHSC-PSM's collaboration with other USAID GHSC projects and global fora has also been instrumental in promoting supply chain health and improving the availability of essential commodities. In terms of specific achievements, GHSC-PSM has reported a 27% increase in household income among program participants compared to the control group in the HIV/AIDS sector. The project has also achieved significant cost savings on malaria commodities, with a 25% reduction in costs through its proactive procurement strategy. Additionally, GHSC-PSM has made significant progress in promoting supply chain health, including the adoption of standards-based identification, barcoding, and data-sharing standards. Overall, GHSC-PSM's efforts have contributed significantly to the global health supply chain, promoting efficient and cost-effective supply chain management practices, and improving the availability of essential commodities to save lives and create a healthier future for all.
