Abstract
This has led to a substantial number of internal displaced persons, totaling 6.5 million. The crisis has left millions of people food insecure, prompting a response from USAID's Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) and its partners. In response to the crisis, USAID/FFP has provided food vouchers for over 1.3 million Syrians in neighboring countries, enabling them to purchase food in local markets. This initiative has been instrumental in addressing the urgent food needs of Syrian refugees. In Fiscal Year 2015, USAID/FFP provided more than $244 million to the UN World Food Program (WFP) to support Syrian refugees in meeting their food requirements. The refugee population in neighboring countries is substantial, with significant numbers in Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, Iraq, and Egypt. According to UNHCR figures as of January 11, 2016, the refugee population in these countries is as follows: Lebanon (1.07 million), Turkey (2.5 million), Jordan (633,466), Iraq (244,527), and Egypt (117,658). These numbers highlight the scale of the crisis and the need for continued support to address the food security needs of Syrian refugees. The provision of food vouchers has been a critical component of the response to the Syrian refugee crisis. This approach enables refugees to purchase food in local markets, promoting food security and supporting the local economy. The success of this initiative is evident in the significant funding provided by USAID/FFP to support Syrian refugees in Fiscal Year 2015. The continued support of international partners, including the UN World Food Program, is essential to addressing the ongoing food security needs of Syrian refugees. The Syrian refugee crisis remains a pressing humanitarian issue, with significant numbers of people displaced and in need of food assistance. The response to the crisis, led by USAID's Office of Food for Peace and its partners, has been instrumental in addressing the urgent food needs of Syrian refugees. The provision of food vouchers has been a critical component of this response, enabling refugees to purchase food in local markets and promoting food security.
