Abstract
The report aims to provide the USAID-funded ACCELERE!1/A!1 program with data to improve and sustain activities in these provinces. The report focuses on areas of resilience within conflict-affected school communities and answers three research questions. The first question examines how the national social and security environments relate to and interact with the education system in Kasaï province. The second question identifies the resilience factors that positively influence access to safe and quality education. The third question explores how the ACCELERE!1/A!1 program can strengthen these factors for an immediate impact. The report collected data from eight conflict-affected school communities in Kasaï Central and eight conflict-affected school communities in Kasaï Oriental from May 21 to May 31, 2018. The data revealed that 12 of the schools have a high degree of damage, and four have a medium degree of damage. A total of 507 respondents participated in the focus group discussions, with 40 percent being women. The report highlights the challenges faced by schools in the Kasaïs, including militia activity, displacement of students and teachers, and damage to school infrastructure. The analysis also identifies resilience factors that positively influence access to safe and quality education, including community engagement, parental involvement, and the presence of community-based education initiatives. The report provides recommendations for the ACCELERE!1/A!1 program to strengthen these resilience factors and improve education in the Kasaïs. These recommendations include increasing community engagement and parental involvement, supporting community-based education initiatives, and providing training and resources to teachers and school administrators. The report also emphasizes the need for the ACCELERE!1/A!1 program to adapt its activities to the changing context in the Kasaïs, including the presence of militia activity and displacement of students and teachers. The report concludes that the ACCELERE!1/A!1 program has a critical role to play in improving education in the Kasaïs and that its activities should be tailored to address the specific needs and challenges of the conflict-affected school communities. The report's findings and recommendations are based on a qualitative situational analysis that uses secondary data review, a previous conflict sensitivity analysis (CSA) study, and key information/focus group discussions. The report provides a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by schools in the Kasaïs and identifies opportunities for the ACCELERE!1/A!1 program to improve education in the region. The report's methodology involved collecting data from eight conflict-affected school communities in Kasaï Central and eight conflict-affected school communities in Kasaï Oriental. The data collection process included focus group discussions with 507 respondents, of which 40 percent were women. The report also drew on secondary data review and a previous CSA study to inform its analysis. The report's findings have implications for the ACCELERE!1/A!1 program and other stakeholders working to improve education in the Kasaïs. The report highlights the need for the program to adapt its activities to the changing context in the region and to prioritize community engagement and parental involvement. The report also emphasizes the importance of supporting community-based education initiatives and providing training and resources to teachers and school administrators.
