Abstract
The training package consists of several sessions, each focusing on a specific aspect of maternal and newborn health. Session 13, Action Planning for Maternal and Newborn Health, is the final session of the training package. This session is designed to help participants develop an action plan for implementing evidence-based activities to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes in their communities. The session is divided into several components, including motivation, information, practice, and application. During the motivation component, participants are encouraged to reflect on their roles and responsibilities in improving maternal and newborn health outcomes. They are also introduced to the concept of a results chain, which is a framework for understanding the relationships between different activities and outcomes. The information component of the session focuses on MNH monitoring and evaluation and the World Café of evidence-based activities. Participants are provided with a master list of evidence-based MNH activities and are asked to review and discuss these activities in small groups. The World Café is a facilitated discussion format that allows participants to explore different topics and share their experiences and knowledge. The practice component of the session involves choosing appropriate evidence-based activities to improve MNH. Participants are asked to work in small groups to identify the most relevant and feasible activities for their communities. The application component of the session focuses on developing a comprehensive action plan for implementing evidence-based MNH activities. Participants are provided with a template for developing an action plan and are asked to work individually to complete the plan. The plan should include specific goals, objectives, and strategies for improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in the community. The trainer notes for future improvement provide guidance on how to adapt the session to the local context and post. The notes suggest that the trainer should review the entire session plan and handouts, plan the session according to the time available, and organize participant seating in small groups. The resources section of the session includes several handouts, including Evidence-based Volunteer Activities in MNH, Master List of MNH Indicators, Master List of Evidence-based MNH Activities, Action Plan, and Inspirational Story for Closure. The trainer material section includes several resources, including Results Chain for MNH, World Café Instructions, Themes, and Related Resources, World Café Table Numbers and Themes, Task for Individuals and Groups of Two, and Task for Action Plan Worksheets. The contributing posts and external experts section lists several organizations and individuals who contributed to the development of the training package. The session is designed to be adapted to the local context and post, and the trainer is encouraged to review the entire session plan and handouts to plan the session accordingly. The continuum of care framework wall chart is a visual representation of the different stages of maternal and newborn health care, from pre-pregnancy to post-partum and newborn care. The chart is developed in Session 1 of the training package and is used as a reference throughout the training. The master list of evidence-based MNH activities is a comprehensive list of activities that have been proven to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes. The list includes activities such as antenatal care, prevention of mother-to-child transmission, labor and delivery, and post-partum and newborn care. The action plan is a comprehensive plan for implementing evidence-based MNH activities in the community. The plan should include specific goals, objectives, and strategies for improving maternal and newborn health outcomes, as well as a timeline for implementation and a budget for resources. The inspirational story for closure is an optional reading that provides a personal account of the impact of maternal and newborn health interventions on individuals and communities. The story is intended to inspire and motivate participants to continue their work in improving maternal and newborn health outcomes. Overall, the Maternal and Newborn Health Training Package is a comprehensive resource that provides Peace Corps trainees and volunteers with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes in their host communities. The training package is designed to be adapted to the local context and post, and the trainer is encouraged to review the entire session plan and handouts to plan the session accordingly.
