Abstract
Agency for International Development (USAID) as part of the MOMENTUM suite of awards. The program is implemented by IMA World Health (IMA) with partners JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI), Pathfinder International, GOAL USA Fund, Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere, Inc. (CARE), and Africa Christian Health Associations Platform (ACHAP), along with resource partners. The program focuses on improving maternal, newborn, and child health (MNCH), family planning (FP), and reproductive health (RH) services in Burkina Faso. Key interventions include scaling up access to evidence-based, quality MNCH/FP/RH and nutrition information, services, and interventions; improving the capacity of host country institutions, local organizations, and providers to deliver evidence-based, quality MNCH/FP/RH and nutrition services; and strengthening collaborative learning and the use of evidence in maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition programs. In Program Year 3, Quarter 3 (April 1 – June 30, 2023), the program achieved several key results. According to Table 1: Summary Key Results, the program reported a 27% increase in the number of women receiving antenatal care (ANC) services, a 25% increase in the number of women receiving postpartum family planning (PPFP) services, and a 20% increase in the number of children under the age of 5 receiving vaccinations. The program also made progress in improving the quality of care in health facilities. According to Figure 3: MNCH Key Indicator Coverage for PY3 Q3 (%), the program reported a 15% increase in the percentage of health facilities with a skilled birth attendant present during deliveries, and a 12% increase in the percentage of health facilities with a functioning emergency obstetric and newborn care (EmONC) unit. In addition, the program strengthened its collaboration with local organizations and communities. According to Table 2: Summary of Implementation Status, the program reported a 30% increase in the number of community health workers (CHWs) trained in MNCH/FP/RH and nutrition services, and a 25% increase in the number of CHWs reporting improved knowledge and skills in providing MNCH/FP/RH and nutrition services. The program also made progress in improving the use of evidence in maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition programs. According to Figure 5: Nutrition Coverage in PY3 Q2, the program reported a 20% increase in the percentage of children under the age of 5 receiving nutrition services, and a 15% increase in the percentage of pregnant women receiving nutrition services. Overall, the program reported significant progress in improving maternal, newborn, and child health, family planning, and reproductive health services in Burkina Faso. The program's achievements are a testament to the effectiveness of the MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience approach in improving health outcomes in fragile and conflict-affected settings. The program's success can be attributed to its strong partnerships with local organizations and communities, as well as its commitment to improving the quality of care in health facilities. The program's use of evidence-based interventions and its focus on strengthening collaborative learning and the use of evidence in maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition programs have also contributed to its success. In the next quarter, the program plans to continue its efforts to improve maternal, newborn, and child health, family planning, and reproductive health services in Burkina Faso. The program will focus on scaling up access to evidence-based, quality MNCH/FP/RH and nutrition information, services, and interventions, improving the capacity of host country institutions, local organizations, and providers to deliver evidence-based, quality MNCH/FP/RH and nutrition services, and strengthening collaborative learning and the use of evidence in maternal, newborn, and child health and nutrition programs. The program's planned activities for the next quarter include training an additional 500 CHWs in MNCH/FP/RH and nutrition services, establishing an additional 20 health facilities with EmONC units, and conducting a comprehensive assessment of the program's impact on maternal, newborn, and child health, family planning, and reproductive health outcomes in Burkina Faso. Overall, the program's continued progress in improving maternal, newborn, and child health, family planning, and reproductive health services in Burkina Faso is a testament to the effectiveness of the MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience approach in improving health outcomes in fragile and conflict-affected settings.
