Abstract
Agency for International Development (USAID) cooperative agreement designed to strengthen quality maternal, newborn, and child health, voluntary family planning, and reproductive health (MNCH/FP/RH) service delivery in fragile settings. The project aims to advance global knowledge on strengthening MNCH/FP/RH service delivery and building resilience in fragile settings. It is part of USAID's MOMENTUM suite of awards, designed to foster sustainability and help ensure that investments in USAID partner countries are tailored to country contexts. The project will support countries to mitigate the impacts of fragility on the population's health and contribute to the countries' movement along the development continuum toward reduced maternal and child mortality and sustained development. MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience will consolidate gains from previous flagship MNCH/FP/RH programs, while introducing fresh perspectives in systems thinking and resilience. Specifically, the project will strengthen the capacity and resilience of both the health and community systems in focus countries to enable them to plan and implement health strategies that reach underserved populations and address the underlying drivers of fragility. The project will focus on improving equitable access to and use of MNCH/FP/RH services, increasing accountability of district and other local governance structures, and promoting cross-sectoral collaboration to improve or prevent backsliding of health outcomes. In Mali, the project is working to improve the health outcomes of vulnerable populations, particularly in the areas of maternal, newborn, and child health, voluntary family planning, and reproductive health. The project is implementing a range of activities, including training for healthcare workers, community health worker training, and social and behavioral change communication. The project is also working to strengthen the capacity of local governance structures to respond to health system shocks and stresses. This includes providing technical assistance to district health authorities and supporting the development of emergency preparedness plans. In terms of results, the project has made significant progress in improving health outcomes in Mali. According to the Health Facilities Assessment (HFA) results, there has been a significant reduction in pediatric deaths. Additionally, the project has reported a 27% increase in household income among program participants compared to the control group. The project is also working to promote cross-sectoral collaboration to improve or prevent backsliding of health outcomes. This includes working with humanitarian and development actors to improve the health outcomes of vulnerable populations. The project has reported a significant increase in public-private sector collaboration for health and increased collaboration across humanitarian and development actors for health. Overall, MOMENTUM Integrated Health Resilience is making significant progress in improving health outcomes in Mali and strengthening the capacity of local governance structures to respond to health system shocks and stresses. The project's focus on systems thinking and resilience is helping to build a more sustainable and equitable health system in the country.
