Abstract
The project's primary objective is to improve reading skills for one million early-grade pupils in Filipino, English, and selected Mother Tongues, including Ilokano, Sinugbuanong Binisaya, and Tagalog. Additionally, the project aims to provide technical assistance to the Department of Education (DepEd) on the Language and Literacy component of the K to 12 curriculum. The project has three main components and expected results. The first component, Improved Reading Instruction, involves training 9,000 Grades 1-3 teachers on effective reading instruction. The second component, Improved Reading Delivery Systems, focuses on working with DepEd to set national reading standards and develop assessment tools, as well as engaging communities to support reading and conducting Reading Awareness Campaigns. The third component, Improved Access to Quality Reading Materials, involves developing appropriate reading materials for use in classrooms and engaging private partners to provide supplementary reading materials to target schools. The training on effective literacy instruction for Grade 3 teachers is a key component of the Basa Pilipinas project. The training is designed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to implement effective literacy instruction in their classrooms. The training covers topics such as fundamental principles of literacy instruction, balanced literacy, and the 14 domains of literacy. The training also focuses on the use of revised teacher guides, listening stories, and leveled readers to support literacy instruction. During the training, participants are expected to engage in active learning activities, including group discussions, video viewing, and hands-on exercises. The training is designed to be interactive and participatory, with a focus on building the capacity of teachers to implement effective literacy instruction in their classrooms. The training also includes sessions on classroom management strategies and preparing instructional sequences using teacher guides and leveled readers. The training is supported by the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Department of Education. The training materials, including presentation slides, session guides, and handouts, are designed to support the training and provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of effective literacy instruction. The training is divided into several sessions, each focusing on a specific topic related to literacy instruction. The sessions include discussions on fundamental principles of literacy instruction, balanced literacy, and the 14 domains of literacy. The training also includes sessions on classroom management strategies and preparing instructional sequences using teacher guides and leveled readers. Throughout the training, participants are encouraged to engage in active learning activities, including group discussions, video viewing, and hands-on exercises. The training is designed to be interactive and participatory, with a focus on building the capacity of teachers to implement effective literacy instruction in their classrooms. The training also includes sessions on bridging across languages and the use of listening stories and leveled readers to support literacy instruction. The training is supported by a range of materials, including revised teacher guides, listening stories, and leveled readers. These materials are designed to support literacy instruction and provide teachers with the resources they need to implement effective literacy instruction in their classrooms. The training also includes sessions on the use of technology to support literacy instruction and the importance of building a reading culture in schools. Overall, the training on effective literacy instruction for Grade 3 teachers is a critical component of the Basa Pilipinas project. The training is designed to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge necessary to implement effective literacy instruction in their classrooms and support the development of reading skills for one million early-grade pupils in Filipino, English, and selected Mother Tongues.
