Abstract
The project aims to promote integrated water resources management and service delivery across multiple sectors, with the goal of improved water resources management and service access. Specifically, in selected districts of the Rufiji and Wami-Ruvu river basins, the project focuses on three components: Water Supply, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Services, Governance, and Private Sector. Component 1 – WASH Services aims to increase access to sustainable multiple-use water, sanitation, and hygiene services. In FY18, WARIDI completed 10 out of 16 construction projects in the first five Local Government Authorities (LGAs). The project also established 15 Community-Owned Water Supply Organizations (COWSOs) and provided training to over 1,000 community members on water management and sanitation practices. Component 2 – Governance focuses on strengthening governance for sustainable and resilient management of water resources and services under a changing climate. WARIDI worked with national and local government authorities, as well as the two Basin Boards, to develop and implement policies and regulations that support integrated water resources management. The project also established a Technical Working Group to provide technical assistance and support to the Basin Boards. Component 3 – Private Sector aims to increase livelihoods through supporting private sector opportunities in sustainable WASH services, agriculture, and natural resource management. WARIDI worked with private sector entities to develop and implement business plans for sustainable WASH services, and provided training and capacity building to private sector partners on water management and sanitation practices. WARIDI also emphasized private-sector partnerships for efficiency and sustainability, through the lenses of climate change adaptation, gender integration, and youth inclusion. The project worked with communities, private entities, and civil society to improve equitable delivery of water-related services and to enhance integrated watershed management approaches from basin to household level. In FY18, WARIDI achieved significant results, including the completion of 10 out of 16 construction projects in the first five LGAs, the establishment of 15 COWSOs, and the provision of training to over 1,000 community members. The project also made progress in strengthening governance and promoting private sector opportunities in sustainable WASH services. The Rufiji and Wami-Ruvu river basins are the geographic focus of the project, with WARIDI working through national and local government authorities, the two Basin Boards, communities, private entities, and civil society to improve equitable delivery of water-related services and to enhance integrated watershed management approaches from basin to household level. The project's timeframes are from October 1, 2017, to September 30, 2018, with a contract number of AID-OAA-I-14-00068) Task Order No. AID-621-TO-16-00003. WARIDI's achievements in FY18 demonstrate the project's commitment to improving water resources management and service access in Tanzania. The project's focus on integrated water resources management, governance, and private sector opportunities has the potential to improve the lives of millions of people in the Rufiji and Wami-Ruvu river basins.
