Abstract
The program is funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and operates under the AIDS, Population & Health Integrated Assistance Program (APHIA II). The program's effective project dates are from May 14, 2007, to May 13, 2012. The program's quarterly report for April to June 2009 highlights several key achievements and challenges. In terms of HIV/AIDS prevention, the program has made significant progress in expanding facility-based services, including prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) and counseling and testing. The PMTCT services have seen a notable increase in uptake, with a cascade of overall uptake of PMTCT services reaching 85% in June 2009. Counseling and testing services have also shown improvement, with a 25% increase in the number of clients tested between October 2008 and June 2009. The program has also made progress in expanding care and support services for people and families affected by HIV/AIDS. Home-based care services have been provided to 1,200 individuals, and orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) have received support through various programs. The program has also strengthened its systems and capacity building efforts, with training activities conducted for healthcare workers and community health workers. In terms of reproductive health, the program has made progress in expanding family planning services, with a 20% increase in the number of clients served between October 2008 and June 2009. The program has also implemented behavior change communications (BCC) activities to promote healthy behaviors among the community. The program's quarterly report highlights several challenges, including limited resources and infrastructure constraints. The report also identifies areas for improvement, including the need to increase access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) services and to strengthen the program's monitoring and evaluation systems. The program's strategic information section highlights several achievements, including the development of a partnership framework with the SUPKEM and the implementation of an IEC materials development workshop. The section also identifies challenges, including the need to strengthen the program's data management systems and to improve the quality of data collected. Overall, the APHIA II North Eastern Province program has made significant progress in addressing HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and reproductive health issues in the region. However, the program still faces several challenges and areas for improvement, which need to be addressed to ensure the program's continued success.
